Best Octave Pedals

Best Octave Pedals On The Market (November 2020)

Updated - November 19, 2020

Guitar octave effect pedals are sometimes known as octave processors. They are stomp boxes that blend a tone into your guitars signal, either an octave above or below your dry signal. This effect is popular with guitarists who need to stand out at any particular moment. For example when a lead guitarist is shredding a solo.

Features

Depending on your budget, the type of pedal you’re looking for can vary dramatically. Budget octave pedals are great if you’re looking to dip your toe into the effect. Giving you a chance to experiment without excessive expense. Choosing a more refined professional octave pedal however can have it’s advantages.

Tracking Distance

The number of octaves a pedal can climb of fall can differ between models. Some are able to track a full three octaves above or below the input signal. Whereas many cheaper models will only be able to manage a single octave.

Monophonic vs Polyphonic

Another benefit of the more modern and technologically advanced models is that many are able to track complete chord progressions. Budget pedals are usually confined to tracking single notes. They can often get confused when presented with complex or excessively quick input signals. This differentiation is known as monophonic vs polyphonic. Polyphonic pedals are the latest of the two, allowing the pedals to track full chords as well as single notes. They have also almost eliminated all sense of input latency some older monophonic models suffer from.

Monophonic’s are only suited to tracking single notes and therefore are fundamentally less advanced than their polyphonic counterparts. They do however still have a widely agreed upon tone advantage.

Polyphonic’s are all digital. The technology of digital octave pedals allows for this advancement. The downside is that analog, as with most other effects pedals sound far warmer. There is a huge audience for analog pedals and therefore some will choose the older technology, despite its drawbacks. For the simple reason that the sound is considered more authentic.

Conclusion

Octave pedals allow you to harmonize without a second guitarist. Adding depth to your riffs and solos with very little effort. Even if you’re not entirely sold on the octave effect we encourage you to choose a budget option and try it out for yourself. Like many of the other effects out there, many have turned to the octave with little expectation. Only to wonder how they lived without one for so long. We’ve covered everything from the budget to the beasts. The feeble to the flagships. Collating feedback, reviews and choosing our recommendations. Hopefully you’ll be able to find your first or next octave pedal further down this page.

Of all the wonderful developments in JOYO Technology the XV1 Polyphonic Octave guitar effect pedal is one of the most exciting.

Everyone loves a good octave, until now we have had our OCHO monophonic pedal which allowed 2 octaves down, both  add some meat to any solo, or to make a big riff sound even bigger. However, while often sounding awesome in the right context, the monophonic analog octave effects are only good for single monophonic notes.

Sometimes something more than the monophonic octave is needed, this is where the JOYO XV1 polyphonic pedal comes into full force, the pitch and modulated effect will allow anything from dry pitch shifting, sub down or up high and introducing the MODulation control to create some impressive polyphonic organ sounds.

The pedals Mod control is the thing you twiddle to get the big room filling organ tones, mixing the octave up and down to create some really fat sounding choir effect. Add a little tremolo, delay or reverb and you have a cool fake organ that will sound like a sweeping synth. Playing around with this pedal will take your guitar from its clean tone to another dimension, people will wonder where the synth is hidden.

The amount of functionality in this new pedal from JOYO is guaranteed to fatten up your tone, add some rich texture and introduce some polyphonic goodness.

The JOYO XVI polyphonic guitar effect pedal is part of the R Series of effects. The Revolution series pedals all feature metal housed stompbox. The R Series are the 4th generation and all feature some very cool ambient LED lighting.

The lights can be toggled from a switch on the rear of the pedal.3 modes of lighting are available to adjust when the ambient lighting comes on.

  • ‘Sync’ to the foot switch – The LED ambient lighting on the front and rear of the pedal with shine bright when the foot switch is pressed, also illuminating the LED effect indicator on the top of the pedal.
  • ‘Always’ – The lights are always on, but the pedal is only activated when you press the foot switch and the LED effect indicator comes on.
  • ‘Off’ – Okay, so Tron may not be your favourite and you want to stick to something a little less futuristic. The lights are off, the LED effect indicator comes on when you stomp on it and activate the pedal.

  • Ultra octaver
  • Range: High / Mid / Lo switchable
  • Regulator: Direct, Oct1, Oct2
  • Red status LED
  • Runs on 9 V battery or power supply

It is widely known that there is great strength in numbers. The ULTRA OCTAVER UO300 underpins your sound with added muscle, generating notes one and two octaves below what you play. The result is powerful, with the deep, rich impact that is only possible when guitar and bass lines are joined at the hip. Wanna play bass lines with your guitar? Wanna play synth-like lines with the addition of some fuzz with your guitar or bass? The stunning UO300 will make your tonal dreams come to life.

First, use the dedicated Range control to specify whether you want to add beef to the high, middle or low frequencies, then dial in the amount of your original sound with the Direct knob. Lastly, turn up the OCT 1 and OCT 2 controls to add the lower octaves. Now bask in the adoration of your fans.

The UO300 isn’t just great for fattening up guitar riffs – it can add incredible beef to keyboards and bass, too! The status LED tells you when the UO300 stomp box is working its magic, and the on/off switch maintains superior signal integrity in bypass mode. You can power the UO300 with either a 9 V battery or the PSU-SB DC power supply (not included).

Help stomp out skinny tone. Get an ULTRA OCTAVER UO300 and go really deep – and you won’t need deep pockets, thanks to its very affordable price. Choose from on octave down, or one octave down plus an additional octave down.

Overall the Behringer UO300 Ultra Octaver guitar effects pedal performs well and does exactly what it says on the box. It might not be up to the mark needed to compete with pedals that are 6 times more expensive than it but honestly that’s not a fair thing to hold against it. It’s a solid budget pedal and a great introduction into octave pedals.

  • Features both fuzz and octave guitar effects in one shell
  • True bypass wiring, quality internal components, 1/4-inch jacks and connectors
  • Achieve the mind-altering sounds famous of analog-based octave shift pedals

The fuzz on the ultimate octave is a brilliantly thick snarling beast. At the lowest possible settings you can coax a more ‘vintage’ fuzz sound from this pedal but it really starts to shine when you crank the fuzz up and ‘Plug In Baby’. With buckets of sustain your lead lines will sound massive and you’ll be able to hold those notes all night. Add the brilliant Octave Up effect to the Fuzz and you’re in ‘White Stripes’ territory. The Octave Up adds a whole new dimension to your riffs making them really pop and stand out.

The other features of this pedal aid and abet when it comes to reserving a permanent place in the pedal chain. The mid cut allows you to scoop out some of the body, which works nicely when thrashing out some crunchy power chords, as does the tone knob, which will be the reins on your dark, nay, bright horse – the highest notes with the octave pedal on – that sounds like tin cans falling from the sky and breaking into glass figurines on marble flooring.

Best part is there’s no clean up. The JF-12 allows rock, blues, jazz, funk, fusion and even country guitar players to access creative sounds from an affordable, spicy pedal.

The Micro POG delivers the same perfect tracking and smooth polyphony in a simplified design. Now in a small pedalboard-friendly diecast chassis, the Micro POG delivers and will blow you away the first time you use it.

  • DRY Knob – Controls the output volume of the DRY signal. The DRY signal is the signal present at the INPUT jack. As this knob is turned clockwise, the volume of the DRY signal will increase.
  • SUB OCTAVE Knob – Controls the output volume of the SUB OCTAVE signal. The SUB OCTAVE signal is one octave below the original input signal, half the frequency of the input signal. As this knob is rotated clockwise, the volume of the SUB OCTAVE signal will increase.
  • OCTAVE UP Knob – Controls the output volume of the OCTAVE UP signal. The UP OCTAVE signal is one octave above the original input signal or twice the frequency of the original input signal. The volume of the UP OCTAVE signal will increase as this knob is rotated clockwise.

So what do we think overall? The Micro POG adds a sweet under-tone when followed by an envelope filter pedal, and gets explosive when in front of an overdrive or distortion pedal. The pedal produces beautiful tones. Whether you’re trying to imitate a 12 string or a bass, or running it through a fuzz pedal for that old school Hendrix sound, you’re going to love this pedal as much as we do. Another yes from us.

And with the option of adding modulation to the mix via our high-powered TonePrint editor, for spacey ambient octaves, SUB ‘N’ UP OCTAVER truly is the definition of pitch perfection.

SUB ‘N’ UP features the latest in polyphonic pitch technology. This means you get lightning-fast note tracking and impeccable hi-fi octave tones when playing chords. So whether you’re into shimmery octave-up tones for swells, a sweet 12-string ring or down and dirty subsonic octave riffs, SUB ‘N’ UP OCTAVER will deliver the goods every single time.

SUB ‘N’ UP OCTAVER also gives you access to a cool monophonic octaver. Great for faux bass-lines with a guitar or for replicating the glorious glitchy imperfections of yesteryears octave pedals. Or!!… hook it up to a bass, crank the two sub signals, and get ready to bring down the PA.

With optimized headroom, True Bypass or Buffered Bypass switch and Kill-Dry on/off, this pedal guarantees optimal tonal integrity and zero loss of tone. And, no matter if the pedal is on or off your precious dry sound is always passed through the pedal unharmed in all it’s pure analog glory due to an Analog-Dry-Through.

Download the free TonePrint app for Android and iPhone, choose the TonePrint you want to hear and beam it instantly from your phone through your guitar’s pickup into your TonePrint pedal. No cables needed.

Overall our impression of this pedal has been positive. It can produce notes one octave above, and one and two octaves below the input signal. The controls initially appear quite simple: level controls for each of the added octave sounds, and one to adjust the level of the original signal. There’s also a 3-way toggle switch, to choose between polyphonic mode, monophonic mode and Toneprint mode.

Toneprint is a game changer, it not only lets you send custom made tones to the pedal via the app but you can actually control subtle settings for each of the additional octaves. So you could increase the gain on the higher octaves but leave it alone on the two lower octaves. The app really does open up the configuration of this pedal to levels far greater than the onboard control knobs can.

A great pedal, with great sounds and lots of customization. Win, win win!

  • Includes the original OC-2 mode, capable of producing notes one and two octaves down
  • Poly Octave effect adjustable to play within a specific note range
  • Bass input for adapting octave sound to bass guitars
  • BOSS five-year limited warranty

The OC-3 picks up where the best-selling OC-2 left off, giving guitarists two brand new octave effects. Using the Polyphonic Octave mode, octaves can now be added when playing chords-a first in a compact pedal. More aggressive sounds can be had using the new Drive mode, which adds a touch of distortion to the octave sounds.

The OC-3 isn’t just for guitar, it’s also for bass. By connecting a bass guitar to the dedicated Bass input, the OC-3 automatically optimizes itself to suit the range of a bass guitar. Now bass players can upgrade to the ultra-stable octave sounds of the OC-3.

Don’t worry. BOSS knows how much guitarists depend on the original OC-2 sound. That’s why the OC-3 includes that classic “dual octave” effect, but with even better stability. This gives you the ability to blend up to three individual sounds: the original note, a note one octave below and one that’s two octaves below.

Overall the OC-2 has a classic octave tone and the new poly setting allows for more subtle effects. It has a great sound, a truly valuable and musical additional to the pedal board. You should check it out!

Electro-Harmonix Octave Multiplexer Pedal

Electro-Harmonix Octave Multiplexer Pedal

  • ✔ Easily Generate Deep Bass Tones
  • ✔ Monophonic Device - Works Only On Single Tones
  • ✔ True Bypass Switching
  • ✔ Durable Metal Chassis
The Electro-Harmonix Octave Multiplexer guitar effects pedal generates deep, phat bass tones one octave below the notes you play.

  • 1/4″ input, dry output and effect output
  • DC power input for battery replacement
  • Status LED – pedal engaged or bypassed

Get down! Generates deep, phat bass tones one octave below the notes you play. Two separate smoothing filters enable you to tailor your sub-octave signal to the exact bass sound you desire, separating the Octave Multiplexer from other octave devices. Run your vocals through it and sound just like Ike Turner. This is a monophonic device and works only on single notes.

  • HIGH FILTER Knob – Adjusts a filter that will shape the tone of the sub-octave’s higher order harmonics. Turning the HIGH FILTER knob clockwise will make the sub-octave sound more gnarly and fuzzy.
  • BLEND Knob – This is a wet/dry knob. Counter-clockwise is 100% dry. Clockwise is 100% wet.
  • BASS FILTER Knob – Adjusts a filter that will shape the tone of the sub-octave’s fundamental and lower order harmonics. Turning the BASS FILTER knob counter-clockwise will make the sub-octave sound deeper and bassier. Please Note: the BASS FILTER knob is only active when the SUB switch is set to ON.
  • SUB Switch – Switches the Bass Filter in and out. When SUB is set to ON the Bass Filter and its corresponding knob are activated. When the SUB switch is set to OFF, only the High Filter is active. Turning the SUB switch on gives the sub-octave a deeper, bassier sound.

This is a very well made pedal, all metal, metal switch, etc. The only plastic is the knobs and they seem pretty solid as well. It does what it’s capable of doing (considering it’s monophonic limitations) very well. If you’re looking for something that will track multiple, complex chords and notes at the same time then this isn’t the pedal for you. If you want a solid octave pedal that is professionally made (exactly what we’ve come to expect from Electro Harmonix) then give this pedal a try!

The Hoof Reaper features our popular Hoof and Tone Reaper fuzz pedals in one handy enclosure with the added bonus of an old school analog octave up. Originally released as a special limited run item, demand was so high that we reintroduced it. Capable of creating everything from subtle octave-up overtones through crushing octave squalls that simulate exploding stacks of amps. Each effect can be used individually as well as in series but the order of effects is preset for optimum performance.

Hoof

Our flagship device! The Hoof is a no-fuss, easy-to-use device capable of sounds from warm, gritty overdrive to a huge, sustaining fuzz. It’s a germanium/silicon hybrid Muff-style fuzz (based on the old green Russian muff) with massive amounts of volume on tap and smooth amp-like sustain. It has a tighter, cleaner sound than most Muff’s which makes it more cutting and discernible in a band setting. The shift control is the key to the Hoof’s character, it alters the frequency response of the tone control. Clockwise scoops the mids and counterclockwise enhances the mids. The Hoof has become the go-to fuzz for many well-known fuzz connoisseurs.

Tone Reaper

The Tone Reaper is a vintage style fuzz device based on the “3 knob” bender. It’s a silicon/germanium hybrid capable of producing a wide range of tones from every bender era with careful tweaking of the Tone and Fuzz controls. From thin and spitty, to thick, growling sustain; it’s all here.

Octave

This is a classic monophonic octave up that will add a swelling octave to the fuzz tone! Since it is monophonic, the effect will be more pronounced when using the neck pickup and playing above the 12th fret.

Although this pedal is expensive, it’s a 3 in one hybrid. The HoofReaper is capable of creating lots of sounds from subtle octave up undertones through to crushing octave squalls. If you missed the limited edition pedal in 2010 then take the chance this time around to get hold of the HoofReaper 3 in 1 guitar effects fuzz & octave pedal today.

  • Since Octapussy is expressly designed to be interactive with your guitar’s controls, it should best be placed as early in the signal chain as possible, preferably right after your guitar and definitely not after any buffered pedal.
  • Fuzz pedals are great stacked after the Octapussy. The Octapussy will match up great with the fuzz and cut right through it.
  • Amp-style overdrives should definitely be placed after the Octapussy. The Octapussy into the DLS MkII is an amazing combination.
  • Octapussy can run on 9volts DC all the way up to 18volts DC.
  • Play sweet, breathy, delicate octave-up melodies up high on the neck.
  • Play epic soaring leads that are full sounding with upper harmonics that bloom and bloom as you hold that bend.
  • Get tough sounding almost ring modulated double-stops that growl when you sustain it.
  • Obtain sounds that evoke Caribbean steel drums.
  • Riff out with a textured, harmonically rich fuzz tone that can achieve cello/sax-like qualities.
  • Achieve mysterious sounding droning melodies.

The Octapussy is essentially, an octave-up fuzz in the tradition of the Octavia. But it’s not a clone of that circuit! Nope, it’s an original circuit utilizing 3 silicon transistors and two diodes that takes the tradition to the next level! The preamp section is custom voiced to give you an extremely dynamic playing response. You’ll get those famous high-octave lead tones up high on the guitar neck but you’ll also get an amazing array of fuzz tones anywhere else on the neck – just by how you play it and how your guitar’s volume, tone, and pickup selector is set.

The more you play the Octapussy, the more sounds you’ll find in it!

  • Gain – This control increases the gain for more fuzz, harmonics, and upper-midrange frequency boost. it is voiced to be usable throughout its range from minimum all the way to maximum.
  • Attenuate – This control should normally be set full counter-clockwise. For best tone and response, only attenuate where you’ve got the Gain and Body knobs really cranking and need to reduce the output some.
  • Body – This control increases the bass response or ‘thump’ frequencies. like the Gain knob, it also increases output and harmonic content. Technically, it is a negative-feedback loop with variable frequency response. But let’s not dwell on technicals. ..this is another more knob!

The Catalinbread Octapussy modern octave fuzz pedal is one of the most dynamic, responsive octave up fuzz we’ve seen. It has great note bloom and sustain. The Octapussy doesn’t choke your notes off like some budget octave fuzz pedals. Depending upon where the knobs are set on both the pedal as well as the volume knob and pickup selection on your guitar this one does everything you want. From octavia styled leads to think power chord riffs. We can’t recommend this octave fuzz pedal enough!

Catalinbread Perseus Sub-Octave Fuzz Pedal

Catalinbread Perseus Sub-Octave Fuzz Pedal

  • ✔ Toggle Switch - Choose Between 1 Or 2 Octaves Down
  • ✔ Features Volume, Cut & Blend Control Knobs
  • ✔ Tracks Anywhere On The Neck
  • ✔ True Bypass Switching
The Catalinbread Perseus sub-octave fuzz guitar effects pedal is so massive and thundering, you’ll regret turning it off. Called Perseus due to the lowest note in the universe coming from the Perseus cluster.

Catalinbread believe the Perseus is the coolest analog octave-down fuzz out there! The Perseus is an octave-down fuzz that allows you to select either one or two octaves down mixed with a fuzz sound that you can blend to any mix of the two you want, including just the fuzz or just the sub-octave. The Perseus can track the sub-octave note accurately no matter where on the neck you are playing!

The Perseus features three knobs and an octave switch. While the controls on the Perseus may seem simple, it’s important to know that your guitar’s tone, volume and pickup selection makes a big difference in the Perseus’ behavior.

  • Volume – You’ll notice that Perseus has plenty of outpute so you can pummel your amp to your heart’s desire. Unity volume is around 10:00.
  • Cut – It reduces the bass content of your signal. This allows you to use the Perseus into a cranked, overdriven amp without ‘flubbing’ out from too much bass as well as creating cool textures for lead playing.
  • Blend – This control allows you to mix the fuzz and octave sounds in any amount you want.
  • Octave Switch – This switch allows you to switch between one or two octaves down.

Some words from the lead designer of the Perseus pedal.

“I’ve always liked the idea of analog octave down pedals. But most of them don’t track well on the low strings and some of them don’t have enough output or any control over the output volume at all. Of course, with the new offerings in the digital realm, we now have pedals that will track perfectly and even polyphonically to boot! The digital pedals are way cool, but I was still hankering for somethiing funky, greasy, fuzzy. ..unpredictable, if I want it to be. So I got out the breadboard and started working.”

Oh, and why is this pedal called Perseus?

“The lowest note in the universe is coming from a black hole in the Perseus Cluster, about two hundred fifty million light yeras away. What’s happening out there is that intergalactic gas has concentrated around a cluster of galazies, forming a cloud. A massive black hole is sending out jets of particles that crash into the cloud, causing pressure waves to ripple outward. Some astronomers interpret these as sound waves. of course, even if you call it sound, it’s too low for anyone to hear. They estimate the note to be a ‘B flat’, about fifty-seven octaves lower than middle C.”

“Ok, no, the Perseus won’t give you 57 octaves below middle C, but it will give you a measly one or two octaves!”

-Howard Gee, Catalinbread

Overall, if you play lead, this is a great pedal with a very unique sound. It’s durable, well made, and with its own noise gate system inside, it’s as quiet as a mouse until you come to play something. For something other than your usual ‘octave up’ pedal, give the Perseus a try.

  • SUB OCTAVE Knob – Controls the output volume of the SUB OCTAVE signal. The SUB OCTAVE signal is one octave below the original input signal, or half the frequency. As this knob is rotated clockwise, the volume of the SUB OCTAVE signal increases.
  • OCTAVE UP Knob – Controls the output volume of the OCTAVE UP signal. The OCTAVE UP signal is one octave above the original input signal, or twice the frequency. The volume of the OCTAVE UP signal increases as this knob is rotated clockwise.
  • DRY Knob – Controls the output volume of the DRY signal at the EFFECT OUT jack. The DRY signal is the signal present at the INPUT jack. As this knob is turned clockwise, the volume of the DRY signal at the EFFECT OUT Jack increases.

We’re very very impressed by just how much punch Electro-Harmonixs have been able to give this small sized ‘nano’ pedal. It’s the smallest member of the POG clan and comes with a new algorithm for tracking and sound. It has the same fantastic benefits as the EHX Micro POG octave pedal but in an even smaller casing. If creating the subsonic mayhem that can only be measured on the Richter Scale is what you live by, we’ve designed loads of bass-dedicated TonePrints that substitute the octave up knob for the bass-approved Sub2 control.

Sometimes nothing can beat the quirky imperfections of vintage gear. That’s why we designed a monophonic octave algorithm that painstakingly recreates every idiosyncratic flaw of a vintage analog octaver. SUB ’N’ UP MINI OCTAVER is perfect for creating faux bass-lines with a guitar, or will you dare to plug in a bass – and level the whole house?

Download the free TonePrint app for Android and iPhone, choose the TonePrint you want to hear and beam it instantly from your phone through your guitar’s pickup into your TonePrint pedal. No cables needed!

We really like this pedal. The TC Electronic Sub ‘N’ Up Mini Octaver allows an electric guitar to effectively and accurately replicate a bass guitar. The pedal tracks notes very well and does not get lost when whole chords are played either. Make sure you’re careful with the volume level settings. Caution need to be exercised when using this pedal or you could quite easily blow your speakers if you’re not careful. Another easy recommendation from us.

What Is An Octave Pedal?

The simplest explanation of an octave pedal is that it combines the dry input signal from a guitar with one or more additional signals. These additional signals are a number of octaves higher or lower than the original input signal. This depends upon the configuration opted for by the guitarist. Advanced pedals are able to track full chords as well as signal notes.

Why Choose An Octave Pedal?

From guitar to bass pedal models, the best octave pedals exist to do a very specific job. In order for an octave pedal to reach its true potential the guitarist has to understand that many other aspects have to be spot on.
